Spider-Gwen: Last Dance
Rebranding Project
Brainstorming & Research:
This project started with a temporary 'stand-in' logo that the crew and director used to set the overall feel of the film. Based on the comic series Radioactive Spider-Gwen, the story follows Gwen Stacy as she balances life as a teenage girl in a band with her alter ego, Ghost-Spider. To reflect this duality, I aimed to blend the classic superhero logo with riot grrrl and punk aesthetics. I drew inspiration from the comic’s art style, as well as the colors and movement of the existing stand-in logo, to create a design that felt true to the story and energy of the film.
Design Execution:
Experimenting with punk and handwritten typography, I settled on two typefaces that captured Spider-Gwen’s duality as a character. I hand-drew outline text over the logo to give it a ‘high school punk’ vibe, a nod to Gwen Stacy being just a regular girl faced with impossible choices. In collaboration with the team and director, we made sure the logo and rebrand were solid and cohesive, able to work across various platforms and media. Building a strong color palette and complementary assets like Polaroid photos, band tape textures, torn paper, and safety pins, we created a confident, playful aesthetic that honors the comic source material while opening the film to a broader audience.
Feedback & Refinement:
After sharing my logo variations with the team and director, they loved the direction and how it evolved from the placeholder logo. Using their feedback, I focused on the punk and playful aesthetic, which I was then able to expand into additional assets and promotional materials, including the official poster. For the poster, I was invited to the studio to oversee the photoshoot, providing guidance to ensure the images captured the energy and aesthetic needed for the final design.
Final Deliverables:
This project was by far the largest I’ve worked on, creating assets and materials across multiple platforms to promote the film and support a fundraising campaign. I hand-drew sticker designs for the fictional band 'The Mary Janes,' which Gwen drums for in the film. These stickers are shared on Instagram as a fun way for fans to create posts and help spread the word. I’m especially proud of the poster design — I spent hours hand-painting over the RAW photos of each character, experimenting with colors and brushstrokes to capture the comics’ art style. Using the main poster as a foundation, I developed teaser trailer thumbnails and other visuals for the film’s online promotion. Overall, I had a blast working on this project — combining my love of punk, Riot Grrrl aesthetics, and comic books with a large-scale, creative, and productive project was a total win-win.
